A Russian submarine cable in the Baltic Sea has been damaged by an un specified external impact, Tass reported on Saturday, citing the Telecommunications provider PJSC Rostelecom.

The restoration work is underway and the incident has had no impact on subscribers so far, according to the state company.

The Finnish media previously reported that the Nation Coast Guard was supervising the repair work to a telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland by a Russian ship. It is not clear when the damage took place.

The instances of cable damage in the Baltic Sea have become more frequent, with Sweden, Norway and Finland informing similar incidents in recent months.

That is concerns in the region about the safety of underwater and data infrastructure. While officials so far cannot identify the evidence of sabotage, numerous officials have raised the possibility of malicious activities.

NATO recently increased its surveillance operations after alleged sabotage of submarine cables between Finland and Estonia.

With thousands of vessels that pass it every day, the Baltic Sea is one of the most busy shipping routes in the world.
